Nineveh is mentioned in Gen 10, so they have history, so Israel is about 500+/- years younger.
This is about 960B.C. during the first king of Northern kingdom Jeroboam son of Nebat,
Nineveh's final destruction will be 612B.C. so given 300+ years more. Foretold by Nahum and Zephaniah the prophets.
Nineveh was a great nation, it contained in circuit about forty-eight miles, and had 1500 towers, and at this time there were 120,000 children in it;

so back to the issue of Nineveh, their evil has been heard and God shall show them mercy if they repent and Jonah knew the love and mercy of God to repent or stay the judgment of a people who would respond correctly to His threat or warning.

later He God shall destroy in 612B.C.
Zep 2:13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.

Prophet Nahum declares the lions will live there, this is what happens in desolate places for long periods of time, the same happened in the Northern kingdom of Israel after they were deported and Assyrians had to figure why there was death of wild beast, as they moved into area.
